Words Matter: A Teacher’s Guide to Climate Vocabulary

Teachers knows that words are not neutral. And so the vocabulary we use to talk about climate change are not neutral. They shape how pupils think about the problem, how they feel about it, and whether they believe they have any role to play in it. Words are powerful.

If you’re new to this subject, you won’t be surprised to know that the debate about ‘climate change’ versus ‘climate crisis’ has been running for years. But some of it is subtler: language that embeds assumptions we have not examined, simplifications that create misconceptions, or terms that feel scientific but quietly close down thinking rather than opening it up.

This guide looks at the vocabulary of climate education – what our word choices communicate, what they sometimes get wrong, and what teachers can do about it.

Why climate vocabulary matters for teachers

In 2003, US Republican strategist Frank Luntz sent a memo to the Republican Party recommending they switch from using ‘global warming’ to ‘climate change’ in political communication. His reasoning was explicit: ‘climate change’ sounds less frightening, less human-caused, and less urgent. It worked. And two decades later, ‘climate change’ is the dominant term in both policy documents and classrooms.

Cambridge English’s analysis of language found that the word ‘warming’ typically carries positive connotations – we warm our toes by a fire, we feel warm and fuzzy. ‘Heating’, by contrast, is purposeful and mechanical: we turn heating on and off, we manage it. ‘Global heating’ is more accurate both scientifically and emotionally – but it feels unfamiliar and doesn’t trip off the tongue.

The DfE’s own Climate Literacy Survey (2024) found that the majority of young people either don’t know or overestimate the actual extent of global warming since 1850. This suggests that the language used in classrooms is not helping them build accurate mental models. Meanwhile, pupils overestimate the role of transport and plastic waste, and underestimate the role of food systems and land use. The words we reach for in lessons are partly responsible for these misconceptions.

None of this means teachers should police language obsessively or overwhelm pupils with caveats. But it does mean it is worth thinking carefully about the words we choose, and being honest with pupils about why language in this area is contested.

Words to handle carefully

  • Global Warming

The term most people still use, but scientifically imprecise and politically softened. ‘Warming’ sounds benign. It suggests a gentle, gradual process rather than a destabilising one. And it focuses only on temperature, when the crisis involved include rain, drought, flooding, and sea level rise.

Better: Use ‘global heating’ when precision matters. Use ‘climate change’ when describing the full range of effects. Use ‘global warming’ when it appears in the materials you are using – but explain what it is actually describing.

Why: The switch from ‘warming’ to ‘heating’ was recommended by the IPCC’s own communications experts and adopted by the Guardian style guide in 2019. It is more accurate and more emotionally honest.


  • Climate Change

The most commonly used term, but as we read above, deliberately introduced to replace ‘global warming’ because it sounds less alarming. ‘Change’ suggests something neutral, even natural. It does not convey the human cause, the urgency, or the scale of disruption involved.

Better: Use ‘climate change’ as the general term it is difficult to avoid after all. But be honest with older pupils about its political history. Add to it it with more precise language: ‘human-caused climate change’, ‘the climate crisis’, ‘climate breakdown’.


  • Climate Crisis / Emergency

More accurate in conveying urgency, but could cause anxiety and doomism in some if used without context. Research suggests that catastrophic framing increases eco-anxiety without necessarily increasing motivation to act. Used repeatedly without pairing with agency and action, ‘crisis’ and ’emergency’ can overwhelm rather than mobilise.

Better: Do use these terms – they are accurate – but always pair them with evidence of action and change. Do not use ‘crisis’ to describe the problem and then leave pupils sitting with it. What is happening about the crisis? What can they do?


  • Natural Disaster

Widely used to describe floods, wildfires, droughts, and storms. But framing extreme weather events as ‘natural’ erases the human contribution to their frequency and severity. A flood is a natural event. A flood made significantly more likely by decades of greenhouse gas emissions is something more specific.

Better: Try ‘climate-influenced weather event’, ‘extreme weather event’, or simply name it precisely: ‘the flooding was made more likely by climate change’. Avoid ‘natural disaster’ when the event has a significant anthropogenic dimension.


  • Fishing Stock / FIsh Stock

I use this as an exemple – other animal / livestock and terms could be used. This is a term embedded in food and geography curricula that frames fish as an economic resource, something to be managed, harvested, and optimised. It demonstrates a particular relationship with the natural world: extractive, ownership-based, human-centred.

Better: Use ‘fish populations’ or ‘marine species’ when the focus is ecological. Use ‘fisheries’ when the human dimension is part of what is being discussed. Be explicit with pupils about what the term ‘stock’ implies.

Why: Language that treats living species as commodities shapes how pupils think about our relationship with the natural world.


  • Carbon Footprint

A useful concept – one coined and popularised by BP as part of a campaign to shift responsibility for emissions from corporations to individuals. It is not wrong, but the problem is individual consumption, not systemic production. Used without context, it can produce guilt, what is fundamentally a collective and political challenge.

Better: Use it – it is a real and useful measure. But contextualise it. Who produces the most carbon? What are the systemic levers? Individual action matters, but it sits within a larger context that the ‘footprint’ frame can obscure.


  • Sustainable / Sustainabilty

Controversial – but this can be overused and so it’s almost meaningless. ‘Sustainable’ has been applied to everything from plastic straws to aviation, often as a synonym for ‘slightly less bad’. Pupils who hear it constantly in marketing and school communications may begin to tune it out – or, worse, associate it with greenwash.

Better: Be specific. What is being sustained, for whom, for how long, and at what cost? ‘Sustainable development’ means something quite precise in the Brundtland definition — ‘meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ — but the word has drifted far from that precision.


  • Net Zero

A policy target that has entered vocabulary everywhere – but one that is genuinely contested and frequently misunderstood. ‘Net’ zero means balancing emissions with removals – not eliminating emissions. It has been criticised as providing cover for continued fossil fuel extraction on the assumption that future carbon removal technologies will compensate.

Better: Use it accurately. Explain what ‘net’ means – and why some scientists and campaigners argue that ‘real zero’ is a more honest target. This is a legitimate scientific and political debate that older pupils are well equipped to engage with.

The simplification dilemma

Teachers face a genuine tension in climate education: the science is complex, contested at the edges, and full of uncertainty – but pupils need accessible, clear explanations with vocabulary that they can understand and act on. Simplification is not just unavoidable; it is part of good teaching.

The question is where simplification tips into distortion. A few tips:

  • remember – the basic science of human-caused climate change is settled. The precise sensitivity of the climate to CO2, the timing of tipping points, the trajectory of regional impacts involve genuine uncertainty. Pupils old enough to understand this distinction should be taught it, rather than being given a false impression of total certainty
  • you can explain the greenhouse effect simply without misrepresenting its severity. Simplicity in the mechanism; accuracy in the impact
  • climate sceptics use scientific uncertainty as a reason for inaction. Good climate education teaches pupils to reason under uncertainty, not to treat uncertainty as paralysis
  • a Year 4 explanation of climate change will necessarily be simpler than a Year 10 one. That is fine. What matters is that each explanation is accurate at its level and does not create misconceptions that have to be undone later
  • ‘I’m going to explain this simply for now — the full picture is more complicated, and we can explore that complexity as we go.’ This is honest, builds trust, and models good scientific thinking

Worth remembering: The goal of simplification is to make the science accessible, not to make it more comfortable. An accurate but simple explanation is always better than an inaccurate one.

Teaching pupils to notice climate vocabulary

One of the most powerful things climate education can do is teach pupils to be critical readers of the language used around them. This is media literacy, and it is very relevant.

Some practical approaches:

  • Ask pupils to collect terms they encounter in the media or in school resources – and discuss what assumptions are embedded in them
  • Compare how different publications describe the same event – a ‘natural disaster’ in one, a ‘climate-influenced flood’ in another
  • Look at corporate sustainability language and ask what is actually being claimed – and what is not
  • Explore the history of specific terms – the Frank Luntz memo is publicly available and genuinely interesting to older pupils
  • Discuss why the IPCC uses ‘very likely’ and ‘extremely likely’ rather than ‘certain’ – and what those terms mean scientifically

This is not about making pupils cynical. It is about making them literate — equipped to engage with climate communication rather than simply receive it.

A note on cultural and ecological language

Some of the most interesting challenges for teachers in climate vocabulary go beyond individual terms. They involve the deeper assumptions embedded in the language of how we relate to the natural world.

English is a language built on particular relationships with nature extractive, ownership-based, human-centred. Words like ‘stock’, ‘resources’, ‘yield’, ‘harvest’ and ‘exploitation’ (in its neutral economic sense) all embed assumptions about the natural world as something to be used.

Other knowledge traditions offer genuinely different frames. New Zealand’s te ao Maori concept of kaitiakitanga frames the human relationship with the natural world as guardianship rather than ownership. Indigenous land management concepts across the world encode relationships with ecosystems that are profoundly different from the extractive framing dominant in Western curricula.

Climate vocabulary, eachers and the bottom line

Words matter in climate education, they matter in education! But not because every term needs to be scrutinised to the point of paralysis, but because the language we use shapes what pupils think, feel, and believe is possible.

The goal is that we are honest, who said that perfect should not be then enemy of the good? We need language that is accurate, that does not embed assumptions we have not examined, and that equips pupils to read the world more clearly rather than less.
